NATURE OF LEARNING
Meaning of learning
Learning is the process of acquiring new understanding, knowledge, behaviours, skills, values, attitudes, and preference.
Definition
According to Gates and others, “Learning is the modification of behaviour through experience.”
According to Hendry P Smith, “Learning is the acquisition of new behaviour or the strengthening or weakening of old behaviour as a result of experience.”
According to Kingsley and Garry, “Learning is the process by which behaviour is originated or changes through practice or learning.”
According to Melvin H Marks, “Learning is a relatively entering change in behaviour, which is a function of prior behaviour (usually called practice).
The definitions emphasizes four attributes of learning as a process.
1. Learning is a permanent change in behaviour. It doesn’t include changes due to illness maturation for use of intoxicants.
2. Learning is not directly observable, but manifest in the activities of the individual.
3. It results in some change of enduring nature.
4. Learning depends on practice and experience.
CHARACTERISTICS OF LEARNING

⮚ Learning is Purposive and Goal-oriented.
⮚ Learning is a process of progress and development.
⮚ Learning is the organisation of experiences.
⮚ Learning occurs due to activity and environment.
⮚ Learning helps in achieving teaching-learning objectives.
⮚ Learning is the fundamental process of life.
⮚ Learning is the relationship between stimulus and response.
⮚ Learning is transferable.
